Chief Technical Officer – Rotterdam

We’re looking for a Chief Technical Officer for an Airbnb like startup in Rotterdam. Our client is an online, venture-backed startup that provides a platform that focusses to help students worldwide. The platform is free to use and is strictly student-to-student. Universities sign up for this platform and then students can use it for free. The company is at an exciting point in its growth strategy and relies on the imagination and innovation of its employees to develop further into the world, anywhere.

Since their formation in 2009 they have launched their platform on 87 universities worldwide. From Rotterdam to Barcelona and all the way to Sao Paulo, Singapore, and Los Angeles. We’re talking about a rapidly growing start-up with great ambition.

Your Responsibilities:

 

To scale the platform towards a website that is able to show thousands of advertisements. Next to that, all these advertisements need to be booked through a payment/transaction system. To go from the current situation towards our new platform we completely need to redesign the website.

At this moment we do not have any IT expertise in our company. Therefore, we are looking for a Chief Technical Officer who can re-build the new website from scratch and become part of a fast growing company. Further, when the company keeps on growing, we need to expand our tech team. Therefore, our ideal candidate can develop our new website, and hasthe ambition to grow towards a CTO position in which you build a lean and mean tech team while we accelerate.

You will solve complex problems with help of the Founder and his Investors; you will communicate with them and the others in the team and translate their and your ideas into action on the website.

Skills:

  • You are a zealous developer – an educational background in the field of Information Technology or similar is preferable.
  • 5+ years relevant experience (your payment will be according to level of seniority)
  • Experience in database engineering.
  • Ability to build a scalable cloud-hosted platform.
  • Exceptional proficiency using one or more of the following languages: PHP, Perl, Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Node.js.
  • 3+ years experience with peer-to-peer payment systems, payment service providers, booking tools, transaction APIs.
  • Someone who can develop a website which can handle round 5000 transactions a year, while already taking into account that this could soon be 5000 transactions a month.


Characteristics:

  • Independent: The ability to work independently: you and the 2 other developers are the only ones working on building the platform from scratch
  • Structured: The ability to work in a structured manner: the only way to make sure that the platform will not become a victim of its own growth, is to be very organized. We are in a high-growth phase, so it’s critical to be able to keep multiple balls in the air.
  • Language: Dutch or English (one of them is required)
  • EU visa/citizen: you need to be a citizen of the EU or to have a work permit that allows a full time in the EU.
